Bollywood Art Director

Sanjay Dhabade is an Indian art director who works  in the Hindi film industry. Dhabade did his schooling from S. V. Joshi  High School in Dombivli in Mumbai. He went for higher studies to L. S.  Raheja School of Art in Bandra and Sir J. J. Institute of Applied Art in Mumbai. After earning a diploma in art direction,  Dhabade worked in the advertising industry for five years. He then  worked in the television industry as an assistant art director to  Nitish Roy  for series like Discovery of India, Chanakya and Mrugnayni. He joined  the Zero Hour India art production house in 1995 where he designs sets  for movies, serials, events and corporate weddings.

Dhabade made his Bollywood debut as an assistant art director with the movie, Dil Aashna Hai directed by star  Hema Malini.  The film hit the screens on 23rd October 1992. He later worked as an  assistant art director for movies like Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja in  1993,  Khalnayak  in 1993, Hum Aapke Hain Kaun in 1994, Prem in 1995, Gupt: The Hidden  Truth in 1997 and Lawaaris in 1999. Dhabade was the chief assistant art director of the movie Raja directed by  Indra Kumar in 1995. The film won two Screen Weekly Awards and received a  nomination for the Filmfare Awards. Dhabade made his debut as an art  director for the film Rakshak directed by Ashok Honda. The movie hit the screens on 29th November 1996. 

Dhabade’s most famous work as an art director and his biggest breakthrough in the Bollywood industry was the super hit movie Gadar: Ek Prem Katha. The  film hit the screens on 15th June 2001. The movie won six IIFA awards in  2002, six Filmfare Awards in 2002, six Screen Weekly Awards in 2002,  and four Zee Cine Awards in 2002 and got 33 nominations as well.

Dhabade also worked as an art director in Bollywood movies like  The Hero:  Love Story of A Spy in 2003, Chocolate: Deep Dark Secrets and Shikhar in 2005, Vivah in 2006,  Apne in 2007 and Khulay Asmaan Kay Neechay in 2008, Ek Vivah Aisa Bhi in 2009, Veer in 2010, Jaana Pehchana in 2011 and Natsamrat in 2018.

He was the  Production Designer of Jaana Pehchana in 2011. He also worked in Marathi  movies like Mati Mai. Dhabade received the Maharashtra State Film Award  under the Best Art Director Category for Dil Churaya Apne, Rakshak and  Krodh. He was nominated for the Screen Weekly Award for Gadar: Ek Prem  Katha in 2002.
